Ok, so here is what I learned. Get the longest dead cattail you can find, and sit down. :) Pull into as many small strips as you can. Meaning break it at the tip and run your finger through the lenght of the cattail to pull off the longest thinnest strip you can. Then do it over and over. It may work with green. Let me know how it goes!!

I want to, but won't be up that way for a bit. I'm headed to WA next week. I'm going to go live with the Grandparents this summer and learn how to tan some hides.

Hi Cindy. I also tried cordage from the cattail, had the same problem, and have had little success with it. Was it wet or dry when you tried? I took a walk through the local city park here in San Diego and I found some suprising materials. I used the regular Fan Palm leaves. They were good but kind of tore at my fingers after awhile. Also the base of the leaves from different larger palm leaves seemed to have tons of natural fibers inside! So far yucca is the best I have used. Maybe some of your neighbors have yucca in their yard, if you dont see any wild yucca. Let me know how its going. :)

I admit it......I'm tunneling.

My state of awareness and practice has been trumped by finding and buying a house this summer then moving this past week. I still get out on the trails but my head is down, eyes on path, thoughts fixed on physical and emotional change. There are times I wish I could let go of all the accruing attachments, pack the pack, and hit the mountains. When I finally get back to that it will be sacred bliss, like reuniting with a best friend.

In spite of my current transplant, I try to focus on

A Quickie

My next flavorful day in the sun was out the back door to Tennessee Valley. It's a Golden Gate National Rec Area about a mile from my house. It's acres and acres of mostly open hills and valleys on the Northwest side of the Golden Gate Bridge. Bunker 88 and a few other smaller, graffitied, and weather-worn Army lookouts constructed during WW2 still stand at attention on various knolls overlooking the ocean. In spite of these man-made accents, it's home to bobcat, deer, jack rabbit, coyote, fox,… Continue

Standard Tracks......

Well, the way I see it, there's life before The Standard and life after The Standard. Tom was right. The forest has a new face. I see every plant, tree, bark, rock, and fallen stick as a potential tool to continue my existence should I ever lose my matches or keen sense of direction. While driving to a favorite trailhead two days after the class, I spotted a fresh ball of baby rabbit fluff in the middle of the road....innards still intact. As I drove by, I thought about stopping and scoopin
