Tracker School

For students of Tom Brown Jr's Tracker School

Hello again Tracker friends.

A few weeks ago I found something I'd been looking for since the Standard and even before. Usable roadkill. This time it was in the form of a squirrel. Yesterday I took it out of the freezer and began what I hope will be a successful brain-tanning process.

Once I had begun skinning it I wished I'd let it thaw a bit longer. It's an interesting thing, trying to cut around the "anus and reproductive organs" when the animal's legs are still frozen in place. However, the squirrel and I persevered and aside from some cut tendons, skewered muscle, and one or two other 'interesting' occurrences, its beautiful skin came off without a hitch. Both squirrel body, and squirrel skin are now residing comfortably in the freezer once again.

The next step is scraping. Now... if anyone reading this has done it before, I would greatly appreciate a suggestion or two as for what I might use to scrape this little-bitty squirrel hide. Thank you so much, and happy tracking.

I've now scraped it. It went pretty well and it was very fun. (So nice to have other people who think this kind of thing is fun). I used a dull serated steak knife and sand paper.
Now I'm trying to remember the brain sequence. Do you brain, then rack, then stretch? I think that's how it goes, but I'm not sure. Thanks for the encouragement guys!

... cool!
Good luck. A spoon should work well.

Nice, keep us updated on how it's going. I have been wanting to do the same.
