Tracker School

For students of Tom Brown Jr's Tracker School

I've been sleeping outside quite a bit lately, even if it's just in a back yard.

I don't care for places where I can see the light of civilization at night. I like to see the stars.

I've been up at my Grandparents place lately. Today I went up the mountain again and sat on a rock for a long time. It always makes me feel a lot better. On the way back down I was again stunned by the variety of little eco-systems that I went through. One minute I'm walking through a wooded area, then a meadow, then practically crawling through overgrown brush, then bam! Out in the open again.

I communicated with a deer today. She was staring at me from a hill and a half away, trying to decide whether she could go down in a valley between us. Eventually I mentally told her "It's alright I won't hurt you." She wagged her tail and started walking down. Then I started musing about hunting practices once I get the eco-village running, and she stopped dead in her tracks, looked at me, and made to walk away. I told her "No, I'm not talking about you or anything." By this time she was uncertain and confused, and chose discretion. She took off and two others I hadn't seen also followed her.

When I was sitting on the mountain, a few hundred yards away I saw a deer leaping along, and I turned my head and focused my gaze upon her. She immediately stopped and started looking around. Once I stopped focusing on her she started walking away.

Very cool Vic. It's a great feeling to communicate. I look forward to my next chance at an escape from civilization.
